Dr George Hyzler (Commissioner 2018-2022)

George Hyzler was appointed as the first Commissioner for Standards in Public Life on 12 November 2018. He relinquished this office on 30 September 2022 in order to take up the post of member of the European Court of Auditors.

Dr Hyzler graduated with a doctorate in law from the University of Malta in 1979 and obtained a Diploma in European Integration from the University of Amsterdam in 1980. He was a founding partner of the firm GVZH Advocates (initially GVTH Advocates), from which he retired following his appointment as Commissioner for Standards in Public Life.

In his legal profession he practised mainly in commercial and civil law, predominantly in the field of corporate law. He sat on the board of directors of a number of private and state-owned companies. He served as president of the Chamber of Advocates, chairman of the Board of Governors of the Malta Arbitration Centre, member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, member of the Commission for the Administration of Justice, member of the Judicial Appointments Committee, chairman and member of the Committee for Advocates of the Commission for the Administration of Justice, and Non-Resident High Commissioner of Malta to the Republic of South Africa.

He is a former member of Parliament (19952003) and served as parliamentary secretary in the Ministry for Economic Services (19992003).

As a student at the University of Malta he served as president of the Student Representative Council. He was also a student member on the board of the Faculty of Laws and on the University Council.

A very keen sportsman with a passion for football, Dr Hyzler participated in various sport disciplines at national youth level including waterpolo, basketball, volleyball and athletics, having held national records in the high-jump.

He has four children and is married to Dr Giannella de Marco.
